Mental Health Counselor, Multicultural Specialist

Job Description

The Mental Health Counselor, Multicultural Specialist is a is a nine month, full-time member of the counseling and health services clinical team, delivering inclusive psychological services to members of the Salem State student body and providing consultation to the student life area focused on equity, social justice and meeting the needs of students of color and other marginalized populations. The position is a benefited, nine month, 37.5 hours/week, appointment, open to licensed mental health professionals.

 

The clinician is responsible for a range of clinical responsibilities and projects. This includes a combination of mental health treatment such as individual psychotherapy, crisis triage, group therapy, clinical supervision, psychoeducation, outreach and assessment. The primary focus of outreach will be with students of historically marginalized racial-cultural communities and will include one evening per week as needed with the Center for Justice and Liberation. The Mental Health Counselor, Multicultural Specialist will also serve as a consultant to the wellness and student life area and the broader Salem State community regarding culturally competent services and programs, students of concern and community wellness.

Please Note: This is a grant-funded position and continued employment is contingent upon ongoing grant funding.

  1. Provide of direct clinical services, as licensed mental health provider, to SSU students within the brief treatment model. This includes triage and clinical assessment, individual and group therapy.
  2. Related case management duties include working with students, their families, off campus care providers and on campus support services. In the event that a client of the clinic is referred for a level of care evaluation, this may include limited off-hours consultation with local crisis services and emergency departments.
  3. Will provide supervision, consultation, and/or didactic training seminars focused on racial trauma, equity, social justice and inclusion to graduate level trainees. This includes coordinating and delivering training on culturally competent clinical services and meeting the unique needs of students from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds.
  4. Will assist the student wellness and CHS staff in reviewing and updating departmental policies and practice to remove barriers and increase focus on equity, inclusion and social justice, to better serve diverse student population.
  5. Will collaborate with campus partners within student life, such as the diversity center (center for justice and liberation),residence life, and others to develop and provide culturally relevant and social justice focused training and programing, to benefit and support our diverse student population. This includes maintaining a flexible work schedule to accommodate one evening per week as needed.
  6. As the multicultural specialist, the mental health counselor will serve as the liaison between the Student Life and other university departments, programs, faculty/staff and student groups which promote the holistic wellness and academic success of students of historically marginalized racial and cultural student communities. This may include ongoing consultation with particular departments, as well as, participation in campus committees and task forces.
  7. The mental health counselor will contribute to the student wellness prevention and education trainings and passive
    programs with a focus on multicultural, equity, and justice for the broader student population. Will help vet the cultural inclusiveness of all departmental programming.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master’s or Doctorate in appropriate mental health field
  2. Licensed to practice in Massachusetts (LCSW, LICSW, LMHC or psychologist), or license eligible within 6 months.
  3. Experience providing clinical services to diverse populations, including people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals, and an ability to respect differences in mental health care needs across cultures and other identities.
  4. Experience with advocacy, education and outreach to promote mental health awareness and access to services for
    students of color.
  5. Experience consulting with collaterals, including family, emergency services, other medical providers and other support service providers.

Working Conditions:

This is a on-site, in-person position in Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities which may require occasional work on evenings and weekends.

 

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
