RES ASSOC II (TEMP)

Job Description

Job Summary

The Pearring Laboratory at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Scientist to study how signaling and structural membrane proteins are properly delivered to the light-sensitive outer segment compartment in mature photoreceptors.

Mission Statement

Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally.  Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.

Responsibilities*

The laboratory has initiated a project to study the mechanisms required to deliver the signaling molecules necessary for light-detection into the specialized primary cilium of photoreceptor cells. We are using a combination of models including cell culture and genetically modified mice. We also use complex techniques including molecular cloning, biochemical purification of proteins, immunofluorescence and microscopy to identify and understand cellular mechanisms regulating neuronal cell fate. Based on their background, skills, and experience, the postdoctoral fellow will manage their own projects. This is a 100%-time research position with an initial appointment for 2 months with possible extension depending on performance.

Required Qualifications*

The ideal candidate will be a highly-motivated individual with a Ph.D. in cell biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry or related field. A strong background in cell and molecular biology, photoreceptor cell biology, and high-resolution microscopy. Experience working with mouse models is essential. Additional qualities include being very organized, self-motivated and independent. Evidence of presentation(s) at national/international meetings. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications*

Working knowledge of photoreceptor or ciliary cell biology. Familiarity with cell culture, molecular cloning, and microscopy.
