Research Lab Specialist Associate

Job Description

Job Summary

The Huang Laboratory is looking to hire a Research Laboratory Specialist Associate to take on additional lab duties and advance specific projects within the lab. Located in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, our laboratory studies how epigenetic modifications contribute to the development of pulmonary fibrosis and other chronic lung diseases. We obtain lung tissue from patients with pulmonary fibrosis and healthy controls from Gift of Life, Michigan and study how fibroblasts and other cell types acquire changes in DNA methylation to contribute to lung fibrosis. Some of our current projects include investigating how DNA methyltransferases and Ten-eleven translocation enzymes regulate DNA methylation in lung fibroblasts, studying how different populations of fibroblasts differ in their DNA methylation patterns, and determining how methylation in fibroblasts might be regulated by tissue stiffness and mediators such as prostaglandin E2. The PI is additional in charge of maintaining the interstitial lung disease tissue biorepository and some of the work will involve processing biospecimens when they arrive. Preparation of lung tissue will involve digestion, cell isolation, positive and negative cell selection, cell culture, and generation of precision-cut lung slices. The Research Laboratory Specialist is expected to help plan and set up experiments using patient-derived cells, perform immunoblot, PCR, immunofluorescence/histochemistry, and learn techniques for epigenetic analysis. Individuals will be expected to collect and organize data and share findings with the PI. We strive to be diverse, inclusive, and respectful to all members of the research community.
