The Freimann Life Science Center (FLSC) is comprised of two animal facilities equipped to house a wide variety of vertebrates. The FLSC is a core facility in Notre Dame Research and primarily serves researchers from the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, as well as those from Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend.
The FLSC is currently seeking a Veterinary Technician/Nurse, who will be responsible for the care and welfare of laboratory animals used in research and teaching. The Technician/Nurse must have knowledge of a variety of animal species including their natural behaviors and their environmental requirements. The Technician/Nurse will gain a working knowledge of animal welfare regulations and federal laws. Veterinary Technicians/Nurses are required to have an understanding of the physical, behavioral and environmental requirements of individual species. They must be able to recognize abnormal clinical signs that could be indicative of disease to report them to the Attending Veterinarian (AV).
Position duties include:
- Performing and/or training personnel on technical procedures such as administering treatment plans as prescribed by the AV, obtaining genetic materials from the animals for genotyping, procedures for identification, and administering anesthesia. Coordinate experimental procedures such as injections and blood withdrawals with the research faculty. Euthanize animals as requested by researchers.
- The daily husbandry of animals, which includes: maintenance of the primary environment by changing cages, providing adequate feed, maintaining the secondary environment (animal room) through proper cleaning procedures, assessing the health of the animals by daily observations of each animal, and recording and reporting any abnormalities seen in the animals or in the environmental conditions of the room to the management.
- Attending continuing education meetings and completing online education modules as assigned by the training coordinator
- Must be able to cross-train in all areas for husbandry and basic animal procedures to cover for staff when need arises
- Completing data entry in the animal management program and maintaining supplies required in rooms such as gloves, gowns, and face masks
- Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or up to 3 years of college or technical school
- 7 or more years of relevant experience
- AALAS certification is expected
- Weekend rotating on call is required.
