Essential Job Duties

The DFER HR Liaison is crucial to the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (DFER) at North Carolina State University. As the DFER HR Liaison, you will coordinate the daily HR functions, including hiring actions for various employee categories and other HR-related tasks. By aligning HR functions with our organizational goals, you’ll help foster a culture of continuous improvement and excellence, making a real difference in the lives of our faculty, staff, and students.

Additionally you get to contribute to the department culture and ensure that DFER is a welcoming and supportive workplace where all employees and students are valued and motivated.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinate hiring actions for monthly employees, international scholars, and no-pay employees.
  • Create, review, and edit position descriptions, job postings, hiring proposals, contracts, and offer letters.
  • Track and evaluate HR functions to support departmental processes and recommend improvements.
  • Serve as the primary HR contact, facilitating communication with faculty and staff.
  • Assist in recruiting top talent aligned with the department’s goals and mission.
  • Collaborate with the College of Natural Resources HR Unit to gain expertise in HR policies and best practices.
  • Contribute to workflow improvements within the department and units.

Other Responsibilities

Below are additional duties that will help you further develop your skills and experience, offering a chance to gain valuable experience which will assist with your growth at NC State.
Administrative Support:
  • Collaborate with Business Office staff, leadership, and partners to streamline processes, manage resources, and coordinate departmental events.
  • Maintain departmental personnel records and organizational chart.
  • Serve as a backup for initiating temporary hires in Job Action Requests (JAR) and timekeeping.
Financial Transactions:
  • Enter vouchers, requisitions, IDTs/IDJs, and journal vouchers for reimbursements and payments as needed.
  • Assist with travel authorizations, reimbursements, and other financial transactions for faculty, staff, and students without administrative support.
  • Initiate salary redistributions, ensuring necessary funding approvals.
Professional Development:
  • Attend training courses and meetings (HR Exchange, Business Connections, CNR Business Services, Faculty meetings) to stay updated on policies and procedures.
  • Other opportunities to participate in projects and responsibilities as determined with your leadership and yourself.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in customer experience where you are able to communicate effectively and professionally, even in challenging situations, maintaining clarity and ensuring smooth coordination with stakeholders.
  • Proactively identify, negotiate, and resolve potential issues, escalating to higher authorities when necessary, to maintain departmental priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office and Google Suite, for reporting, tracking, data management and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with financial and HR transactions in a Higher Education setting.
  • Knowledge of NC State, UNC System and Office of State Human Resources policies, procedures and information systems in order to communicate and process information.
  • Familiarity with enterprise systems, such as PeopleSoft and People Admin
