Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supports student success by implementing a comprehensive program of health services for campus.  Provides direct health care to students; provides leadership for provision of health services, screening and referral for health conditions; promotes health and a healthy school environment; provides leadership in health policies and programs; serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and health care providers.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides direct care to sick or injured students utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and Health Services protocols; makes appropriate referral as needed.
  2. Maintains confidentiality of student health information and student health records in accordance with policy.
  3. Performs special health care procedures and/or administer medication according to Health Services policy.
  4. Uses the nursing process to assess, plans, implements and evaluates care for students with chronic health conditions and maintain accurate and complete documentation. 
  5. Trains, supervises, and evaluates LVNs, Health Assistants, and/or other designated school staff on established clinic procedures for medication administration and special health care procedures.
  6. Coordinates with medical consultant and/or physician on health-related needs of the students.
  7. Trains staff on First Aid, CPR and other life-saving techniques. 
  8. Refers students as needed to community medical resources.
  9. Participates in health promotion activities for students.
  10. Assists in coordination of student wellness activities through approved programs.
  11. Requisitions supplies and equipment’s needed to maintain clinic inventory.
  12. Collects, maintains, and compiles health data necessary and submits to Health Service in a timely manner.
  13. Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsive manner with the defined limits of the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act.
  14. Complies with regulations set forth by the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Texas Education Agency, and College Policy.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited professional nursing education program
  • Valid registered nurse (RN) license to practice professional nursing in Texas issued by State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Valid CPR Certification
  • Minimum 2 years as a Registered Nurse
  •  Valid Texas Driver’s License, reliable transportation 
  • Active and valid Licensed RN and CPR certified

Preferred:
  •  Work experience in community college setting or similar field
  • Work experience working in a medical office, or in a clinical setting 
  • Prior office work experience

  • Information technology skills necessary to perform essential job requirements. 
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with administrators, faculty, staff and students.
  • Standard nursing procedures and techniques.
  • Multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Use and manage an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.

Additional Information

Supervision Exercised
Supervises LVNs, Health Assistant, and students that are completing clinical hours. 

Supervision Received
Immediate supervision from Director of Health and Wellness.  

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment.    
Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.  
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Special Conditions
Immediate supervisor may assign other duties.  
May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed.  
May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed.
