Description

Position Summary

The Navigator is one of the first college representatives’ prospective students meet and will continue to interact with throughout their time at BMCC providing a consistent and knowledgeable touch-point.

The Navigator is part of the student’s admission process connecting students to support services and first term course selection. Coordinate the admission process and answer general questions about BMCC and its programs, assist students through BMCC’s processes, assists them to navigate enrollment services, guides them through intake, provides needed referrals, engages students in career counseling, assists them in choosing their program, and then provides a warm handoff to support services on campus.

The liaison for all academic programs and coordinates efforts to provide intentional intervention techniques, coaching, and training for all navigators as they serve students.

Assist the College’s overall diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, by attending trainings and workshops focused on issues facing our prospective and current historically underrepresented students. 

This position performs all functions and activities within the guidelines and philosophy set forth in the BMCC Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recruitment and Enrollment

  • Effectively conducts information sessions with prospective students, to identify the student’s goals and plans, and assist in building an educational road map to assist each student in preparing for their education at the College. 
  • Provides general information about the College, programs, and courses offered and services available including financial aid, support services, and scholarship opportunities. 
  • Assists students through all steps of the enrollment process (inquiry through class registration) by proactively reaching out to students through email, phone calls, and face-to-face meetings. 
  • Provides admissions counseling to prospective students. Coordinates with enrollment services to facilitate consistent delivery of and to assist students through the admissions and registration processes.
  • Assists the Director to develop, implement, and monitor a data-driven program and specific activities to focus on individuals from targeted populations including economically disadvantaged, single parent, non-traditional students, and historically under-represented populations.
  • Assists the Recruitment and Retention team to provide outreach activities and events throughout the service district as needed.
  • Coordinates and participates in recruitment events as needed. Recruitment events may include college-wide activities, externally hosted events, and may require out-of-district travel.   
  • Assists with the development and implementation of recruitment strategies.
  • Works with the Director to interpret policies and to develop appropriate procedures for implementation.
  • Actively participates in the implementation of enrollment strategies as defined in the strategic enrollment management and recruitment plan.  
  • Work with other navigators to plan, implement, and monitor enrollment campaigns.

Intake

  • Teaches students to use Canvas, Student Portal, and other appropriate resources and technologies used to schedule classes, track program requirements, and support their coursework.   
  • Guides new students through the College’s placement testing process, interpret results and provide guidance as to course and program selection. Advise students regarding program requirements and other documentation needed if applicable.  
  • Refers students to appropriate resources for assistance with disability services, academic and personal issues, and other college related concerns. 
  • Provides students with goal-oriented guidance and steps to success and assist students in setting education goals and milestones while mitigating challenges.
  • Utilizes administrative software to track prospects, enroll students, and provide advisement.
  • Provides course advisement to new students and ensure they are registered for the next sequence of classes.
  • Retention
  • Monitors and tracks student progress and provides outreach to retain students and facilitate completion.   
  • Liaises regularly with faculty and academic departments to remain current and knowledgeable to provide training support to all Navigators who support student needs.
  • Provides one-on-one coaching related to academic success and personal and/or professional and career development with students.
  • Manages academic reporting systems for early alert to students’ performance and academic progress risk, thus identifying and providing timely interventions for those students in need.
  • Prepares and implements intervention plans to work with at-risk students.
  • Assists students with strategies and plans to improve grades, coaching them through barriers.   
  • Practices proactive advising and facilitates follow-up sessions and feedback.
  • Assists transfer students who are transitioning to four-year institutions with admissions, transfer requirements, financial aid, etc.
  • Assists students in career-technical fields to connect with industry partners and career opportunities.
  • Participates in data and process reviews to determine support needs for engagement and retention, including working with students to reengage, maintain learning, and ultimately graduating on time.

General Duties

  • Maintains sensitivity, understanding, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, ability, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Participates in continuous development of cultural competency to support effective relationships and the ability to design systems that are equitable.
  • Submits reports as requested by the Director. 
  • Participates in training activities as needed. May be required to attend professional development activities out-of-district.
  • As directed, gather, track and maintain appropriate documentation for student enrollment, including but not limited to clearances, medical records, and previous training/education. 
  • Participates in the following but not limited to, Welcome to the Pack, Commencement, registration events, college/career events, and other events as assigned by the Director.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Other Aspects of this Position

  • Schedule will include travel to and communication with BMCC Centers and partner locations for student support services, program promotion, and recruitment purposes.
  • Travel to area high schools, college/career fairs, and attend meeting/trainings as required, valid driver’s license required.

This is a part time position up to 29 hours per week as needed; 12 months per year.

Sick Leave: Part time employees earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

Tuition Waiver: Part time employees are eligible for one class tuition waiver per term.  The waiver is for up to four (4) credits, employee is responsible for all associated fees and additional credits.

Pay:  $22.00 - $29.00 DOE
