Responsibilities*

Collect and analyze samples for environmental and ecological studies including field work in remote areas (40%).  Perform complex lab and research related tasks including analyzing samples for chemical or biological characterization, followed by entry of data into a computer database (30%).  This lab support includes being a proficient specialist on lab methods and equipment function, including troubleshooting, problem solutions, and quality-assurance, quality-control (QA/QC) on data.  Perform statistical (including multivariate) and graphical analysis on data (20%).  Contribute to the research for and preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts for publication (10%).

Required Qualifications*

A suitable candidate should possess a Bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline such as biology, chemistry, or environmental sciences, and 1-2 years experience plus the ability to translate, adapt, and apply this knowledge.  The successful candidate should have lab experience in detailed, high-quality biogeochemical analyses of samples, field experience in aquatic biogeochemistry, and should show evidence of skill in computer data entry and analysis.  

Desired Qualifications*

In addition to the required qualifications, desired qualifications include experience in field collection of environmental samples in remote areas under difficult conditions, and experience in operating and coordinating a research collection and analysis program with minimal supervision.  Experience in aquatic ecology or with the following laboratory instruments is a plus: Total Organic Carbon analyzer, nutrient autoanalyzer (nitrogen and phosphorus), fluorometer, Carbon-Hydrogen-Nitrogen analyzer, ion and gas chromatography, etc.

Work Locations

This position is primarily a lab position, but does require moderately strenuous field work in the Arctic (hiking with full packs over tundra) and in occasionally inclement weather.  This position requires 12-15 weeks during the field season to be spent at the Alaska field site.
